Walter (de Morley)

-

Father Edmund de Morley ?
Mother unknown
Wife Elizabeth ?
Children Robert

Nothing is known about Walter. It has been claimed that he was the son of Edmund de Morley, possibly had a brother Edward, and may have been married to Elizabeth. However these claims are far from proven (1)(2)(3)(4).

All that is certain is that he had a son and heir called Robert (5)(6)(7)(8)

Brief details of his children:

  1. Warwickshire Visitation 1619, as published by the Harleian Society, gives the following. Whilst it bears a distinct similarity to the actual pedigree, it is strewn with errors - missing and confused generations, and incorrect first names. Having said that, it does indicate the probability that Edmund & Edward Morley and Isabella & Phillip Deydridge may well fit in somewhere.

  2. "Thoroton's History of Nottinghamshire", Throsby, 1797, Vol 1, pages 97 & 98, sub Barton, gives a pedigree of the Sachaverell family, which, besides the main Sachaverell line, also shows the descent of Joan Stathum, wife of John Sachaverell, who brought the manor of Morley to the family, from a claimed common ancestor, Edmund lord of Morley. The pedigree is simply asserted with no accompanying notes, and is not even referred to in the text. However, this descent of Joan is, as far as my own research has lead me to conclude, accurate - incredibly so in fact, considering that the few other sparce snippets on the descent of the manor of Morley, that appear elsewhere, invariably cover only a small number of generations in comparison to this one, yet all contain multiple errors.
Having said that, there are a few claims made in this pedigree that I cannot confirm (and I can't even be certain what is being claimed about the children of Edmund, the progenitor!), but at the same time have no evidence to cast any doubt on them. Given the correctness of the complete descent, I consider them due of worthy consideration.

  3. "Notes on the Churches of Derbyshire", by J Charles Cox, 1875, Volume 4, page 321, within the chapter on Morley, contains the following :
"Edmund de Morley, soon after the Conquest, is said to have given the advowson of Morley church to his second son, Walter de Morley; and from one of the old chartularies of the Abbey of Chester [[St Werburgh's???]], it appears that the advowson was conferred upon that monastery by Robert, son of Walter de Morley, when Robert de Hastings was abbot [Harl MSS, 1,195, f 13; Add MSS, 6,675, f, 36b]. Robert de Hastings was elected abbot in 1186, and deposed in 1194 [Dugdale's Monasticon (new edit), vol ii, p376]. the same chartulary also mentions a gift of lands at Morley from William de Verdon*; that Richard de Morley, son of Henry de Morley, gave to the abbey full license to dig and take away marl from his marl pits at Morley, Smalley, and in Morley Park, the final agreement respecting these pits being dated 1280; and that Sibila, relict of William Wilde, gave the abbey her fourth part of the manor of Smalley [Harl MSS, 1,965, ff 12, 13]
    * William de Verdon, in the last half of the twelfth century, married Alice, daughter of Robert de Morley.
  4. "Magna Brittania", Volume 5, "Families extinct before the Time of the Heralds' Visitations", states :
"Morley, of Morley. Richard de Morley, great grandson of Philip, Lord of Morley, and sixth in descent from Edmund, Lord of Morley, had a daughter and heir married to Hugh de Rislep, whose heiress married Mascy, of Sale, in Cheshire, whose heiress married Statham, temp. Edw. III.

  5. "Some account of Colton and of the De Wasteney's family", Frederick Perrot Parker, 1879, page 18, cites an entry from 1186 in the register of Leicester Abbey "quoted by Nichols" (presumably from his "Antiquities of Leicester" - I need to check this) :
Habemus ibidem ex concessione et quieta donatione Roberti filii Walteri, venditionem quam Robertus filius Hardulphi nobis fecit de tota terra suam quam habebat in Ashfordby.
  6. "Some account of Colton and of the De Wasteney's family", Frederick Perrot Parker, 1879, page 19, cites a charter (but unfortunately neglects to give any reference to it) which reads :

This was a confirmation of an earlier grant to Robert son of Hardulf (7).
  8. "Some account of Colton and of the De Wasteney's family", Frederick Perrot Parker, 1879, page 19, cites a charter of about 1165 (but unfortunately neglects to give any reference to it, or the reason for his dating) which reads :
