Hugh Flint
1763 - 1831
Hugh was born in 1763 in Tideswell, the 4th child of John and Hannah, and baptised at St John the Baptist's in
Tideswell on 21st September that year (1). He followed all the other men in his family,
and became a lead miner (2).
He married Ann Walton (also known as Nancy), the sister of his brother Matthew's wife Jane, in Tideswell on 8th April
1788 (2), and they lived at Cross Gate, Tideswell (3).
Their first child, John, was born in 1789 (4), follwed by Hugh in 1793 (5),
William in 1796 (6) and James in 1799 (7). His eldest
son, John, died in 1802 (8). His only daughter, Hannah was born in 1804
(9), followed by a second John in 1808 (10), and
finally Matthew in 1810 (11).
His youngest son, Matthew, died in 1829 (12). Hugh died in 1831, and was buried in
Tideswell on November 23rd (13). His wife died less than two months later
(14).
Brief details of his children:
- John was born in Tideswell in 1789. He died aged just 13 in 1802.
- Hugh was born in Tideswell in 1793. He married Elizabeth Palfreyman in in 1817 and they lived in Litton where he
was a farm labourer. They didn't have any children of their own, but later seem to have taken in Elizabeth's niece,
also called Elizabeth, and her husband Edward Young. In 1843 Elizabeth and Edward had a son who they called Hugh Flint
Young. In the 1851 census Elizabeth and Edward are nowhere to be found, and Hugh and Elizabeth have Hugh Flint Young
living with them. It seems very strange for Elizabeth and Edward to have named their son after the uncle they were
living with, and I'm tempted to wonder if there might have been some sort of "surrogacy" arrangement going on here!
Hugh died in 1852, and his wife survived him by another 19 years. Hugh Flint Young died aged 16.
- William has his own page
- James was born in Tideswell in 1799. He initially worked as a labourer, probably on a farm. He married Mary
Bingham in 1820. They set up home in Tideswell, but I can't say where initially (they lived in Back Lane from at least
1841). They had 10 children between then and 1850 - Mary, Hannah, James, Matthew, Elizabeth, John, Ann, Margaret,
William and Martha. By the 1840s James was farming land in his own right, and the acreage increased over the years, as
he obviously did quite well for himself. By the time he wrote his will in 1878, he owned 4 cottages in Townhead, as
well as land and farm buildings, and his probate was valued in excess of £450. He died in 1879, 4 years after his wife.
- Hannah was born in 1804 in Tideswell. In 1827 she married Abraham Gregory, a blacksmith, and they lived with his
father on Church Street in Tideswell. They had 4 children there, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, before in the late
1840s Abraham and their son Jacob moved to the west of Sheffield, where Abraham found work, and Jacob was apprenticed
to a blade grinder. By 1861 Hannah had followed him, and they lived there with son Jacob, whilst son Isaac and his
wife lived next door. In 1867 Abraham died and Hannah moved in with her son Isaac. They moved to north Sheffield in
the 1870s, and she died there in 1885.
- John was born in Tideswell in 1801. He married Mary Middleton in 1830 and they had 7 children between then and 1848
- Mary, Matthew, John, Hannah, Hugh, Henry and Peter. John was described as a general labourer all his life, until just
3 years before his death in 1884 when he was said to be a stone mason.
- Matthew was born in Tideswell in 1810. He died there, unmarried, aged 18 in 1829.
