Rebecca Bradbury

1670 - aft 1715

Father Raphael Bradbury
Mother Maria Haslam
Husband Robert Heathcote
Children Mary, John, Robert

Rebecca was born in Youlgreave in 1670 (1), the youngest child of Raphael and Maria. She had 3 older sisters and 2 (or possibly 3) older brothers (2).

Her father died when she was 15 (3), and some time after this she and her mother moved to Flagg - very possibly living with her sister Lydia and brother in law Cornelius Dale. Her mother died in January 1696 (5), and just 3 months later Rebecca married Robert Heathcote (6), who was the stepson of one of Cornelius's relations.

Their first child, Mary was born the following year (7), then a son John in 1700 (8). The Chelmorton parish registers are badly damaged or missing for the next few years, so its uncertain what other children they had, until their youngest son, Robert, was born in 1715 (9), however all the later entries for Heathcotes in Flagg are accounted for, so any other children they may have had appear to have probably died young.

Her husband Robert obviously did something to upset her sister's husband Cornelius, as the latter's will of 1719 states, "I request that my said Executors will take care that my Wifes Brother in Law Robert Heathcote never have or enjoy any thing that is mine or receive any part of the said Annuity left to my Wife". (10) I can only speculate on the cause, but as Rebecca had inherited a considerable sum of money (4), yet there is little sign of any of this passing to their children, then it may simply have been that Cornelius believed Robert would waste it somehow. Robert died in 1730 (11), but Rebecca's date of death is unknown.

Brief details of her children:
