ROUGH DRAFT

William's early life is still unknown. There are two unnaccounted for burials in the Hope registers - Nicholas of Grindlow and Ann of Grindlow, both buried in 1668. As all the other Redfearns in the parish seem to be related, as Grindlow is very close to Abney, and given that Nicholas wasn't a particularly common name, but does appear in the Redfern's of Abney over the next few generations, these could be his parents, but its perhaps more likely that Nicholas was his brother.

He married Elizabeth Jonson in Hope in 1628 ($AA$), and their eldest son Nicholas was born the following year ($BB$). Another son Robert followed in 1631 ($CC$), and then Dennis in 1634 ($DD$). Another son John, whose birthdate is not known, died in 1637 ($EE$). They then had two daughters - Elizabeth in 1638 ($FF$) and Matilda in 1641 ($GG$).

He served on the jury of Abney manor court in 1654 ($HH$) and then again, with his son Robert, in 1669 ($II$).

His wife Elizabeth died in 1671 ($JJ$), and William died in 1679 ($KK$).

  1. Parish Register of St Peter's, Hope includes the marriage entry:
[1628] Matrimonius solemnizatis erat inter Willimus Redfeanre et Elizabetis Jonson   10 septemb
  2. Parish Register of St Peter's, Hope includes the baptism entry:
[1629] Baptiz... erat nicol... Redfearne filius Will...   29 J...
The register from this period is in bad condition and, especially on microfilm, is not easy to read, but what I could decipher agrees with both the IGI and Val Neal's transcript dating Nicholas's baptism to 29th July.
  3. Parish Register of St Peter's, Hope includes the baptism entry:
[1631] Baptizetus erat Robertus Redfearne filius Willimi   24 februarii

  6. Parish Register of St Peter's, Hope (transcript by Val Neal) includes the entry:
Baptised : Elizabeth, daughter of William Redfearne, 16/9/1638
I wasn't able to confirm this from the microfilm of the register, but some of the early entries are out of sequence, so it likely appears elsewhere.
  7. Parish Register of St Peter's, Hope (transcript by Val Neal) includes the entry:
Baptised : Matilda, daughter of William Redfearne, 14/2/1641
I wasn't able to confirm this from the microfilm of the register, but some of the early entries are out of sequence, so it likely appears elsewhere.
