Joseph Needham

1788 - 1868

Joseph Needham's signature from 1811
Joseph's signature in 1811 (18)

Father Joseph Needham
Mother Martha Wardle
1st Wife Hannah Horobin
2nd Wife Rachel Charlesworth
Children Martha, Sarah, William, John, Susanna, Elizabeth, Julia Ann, Martha, Isaac, Esther, William, Alfred, Mary Ann

Joseph was born in Hurdlow in 1788(1), the third child of Joseph and Hannah, having older siblings Mary(2) and William(3). His sister Esther was born 1790(4). In 1791 Esther and William died in quick succession(5)(6), but when another brother was born the following year his parents re-used the name William(7), and then two years later re-used the name Esther too(8). Another brother Thomas followed in 1796(9), and then sister Elizabeth two years later(10). His youngest two brothers John & Isaac were born in 1800(11) & 1802(12) respectively, and finally the two youngest sisters Sarah in 1804(13) and then Martha in about 1810(15). (The Earl Sterndale parish register also records the baptism of another Joseph born to the same parents in 1805, but I am assuming this to be an error in the register(16)).

Some time around 1804 the family moved the mile or so to his grandfather's farm at High Needham, possibly following the death of his grandmother. His grandfather also died about 3 years later(17). Following his marriage to Hannah Horobin on 10th October 1811 at St Giles in Hartington(18), Joseph moved to Glutton Bridge, possibly living in property owned there by his uncle John(19). His mother Martha died the following month(20), and that may well be why he named his first child Martha about 5 months later(21).

They didn't stay long in Glutton Bridge, moving to Shittershaw Farm in Horton, a few hundred yards down the road from his Uncle John who lived at Goodcow Farm. Their daughter Sarah was born there in 1814(22), followed by son William the following year(23), but he only survived a few days(24). Another son John was born in 1820(25), and finally a daughter Susanna in 1824(26).

Sometime between then and 1828 Joseph appears to have swapped homes with his father, moving back to High Needham - where his wife Hannah died there in 1828(27), whilst his father moved to Horton(17). However he was in Macclesfield by the time he married a much younger woman named Rachel Charlesworth in Prestbury in 1833(28). He soon moved back to High Needham yet again though, either before or just after his daughter Elizabeth was born about 1835(29). They were certainly there by 1836 when Julia Ann was baptised(30). A son Isaac followed in 1838(31), then Esther in 1840(32), and William in 1842(34).

A few months later Joseph's father died(35), and this is likely to be when he moved yet again, leaving High Needham for the third and final time. He eventually ended up in Earl Sterndale(36), but may have settled briefly in Crowdicote first(37). Alfred his next son was born in 1847(38), and then finally Mary Ann about 1848/49(39), although she died in 1854(40).

After appearing to have spent his life up to this point farming various different plots of family land, his final departure from High Needham seems to have also marked the end of this family support, with his occupation apparently fluctuating between selling butter(41)(44), trying his hand at raising a few chickens(45)and labouring(42)(43)(46)(47) for the rest of is life - only once more being described as a farmer at the time of his death(48). He was buried in Earl Sterndale on 8th January 1868(49). His second wife Rachel survived him by 26 years(50).

Brief details of his children:

Sources:

  1. Entry in parish register of St Michael & All Angels, Earl Sterndale reads:

  12. Entry in parish register of St Michael & All Angels, Earl Sterndale reads:
[1802] July 25th Baptized Isaac son of Joseph & Martha Needham Hurdlow Town
  13. Sarah's baptism(14) gives her mother's name as Mary, but this is obviously a mistake as there's no doubt that Joseph & Martha had a daughter Sarah born between 1802-1806 (from other sources such as censuses, wills etc), and there are no other baptisms that could be her.
  14. Entry in parish register of St Michael & All Angels, Earl Sterndale reads:
[1804] May 20th Baptized Sarah Daughter of Joseph & Mary Needham of High Needham
  15. No baptism (or indeed a burial) has been found for Martha. However she is mentioned in a memorial inscription from Earl Sterndale churchyard (as transcribed by DARG, ref B83) which reads:
Joseph NEEDHAM of High Needham died 9 Dec 1842 age 82.
Martha his wife died 24 Nov 1811 age 45.
Martha their dau died 10 Sep 1826 age 16.
Isaac their son died 23 April 1827 age 25.

The will of John Needham written in 1818 also mentions a neice named Martha Needham, and there are no other candidates to whom that could refer.
  16. No other mention of him has been found, and it would be bizarre to re-use a name when the first child with the same name was still alive. Plus in Thomas Needham's will of July 1805 (ie the following month) he states that Joseph had 9 (living) children which is correct if we discount this one, so I believe it was most likely the son of different parents. If it really was a son of Joseph & Martha's then the Christian name is probably incorrect plus he must have died fairly soon (before Thomas wrote his will) but with no burial recorded in the register.

  36. The baptisms of his next children have not been found, and the 1851 census does not give a granular enough location, simply describing his residence as Hartington Middle Quarter(41). The next time his residence is known is at his daughter Mary Ann's burial in 1854 when it is given as Sterndale(40).
  37. His son Alfred claimed to have been born in Crowdicote on the 1861 census. However on the 1871 and 1881 censuses he gave his POB as Sterndale
  38. No baptism has been found for Alfred but according to the GRO index there was an Alfred Needham born in the area in the second quarter of 1847, and his age is given as 3 in the 1851 census(41), 14 on the 1861, 24 on the 1871, 35 on the 1881, 42 on the 1891 and 53 on the 1901. According to the GRO index an Alfred Needham aged 61 died in the area he had been living at the previous census in the third quarter of 1906.
  39. No baptism has been found for Mary Ann, nor a birth in the GRO index. However her age is given as 1 in the 1851 census(41). She is likely to be the Mary Needham of Sterndale (not Mary Ann) whose burial appears in the Earl Sterndale parish register in November 1854 age 6(40) (making a birth in 1848 most likely) as no later mention of her has been traced and according to the GRO index a Mary Ann Needham died in the Bakewell registration district in the fourth quarter of 1854.
