Ann White
1774 - 1821
Ann was born in Priestcliffe around the end of summer 1774(1)(20), the daughter of Thomas and Mary, and baptised at Taddington on 9th October (1). She had two older sisters - Elizabeth and Alice (2). Two years later her sister Sarah was born (3), followed by Mary two years after that (4), and Grace in early 1780 (5). Later that year Mary, Grace and Elizabeth all died within a few days of each other(6)(8), but the cause is unknown. Her youngest sister, also called Elizabeth (although she was actually baptised as Betty), was born in 1781 (9).
Her mother died in February 1783 (10), and her father promptly remarried Ellen Twigg from Winster 11), and Ann's only brother, Thomas, was born in October of the following year (12). However her stepmother died within a couple of months of Thomas's birth (13), and Thomas himself died a month after that (14).
Ann married George Oldfield of Taddington on 2nd April 1793 (15), and their first child, Mary, was born later that year (16). They had two more daughters, Elizabeth in 1797 (17), and Ann in 1802 (18), before their only son, Thomas, was born in 1804 (19).
Ann died, aged 46, in July 1821 (20). Her husband survived her by just over a year (21).
Brief details of her children:
- Mary was born in Priestcliffe in 1793. In 1814 she married Reginald Dicken of Flagg, where they set up home. They had (at least) 2 children - George and Ann. By the 1850s George was a farmer in Taddington, and his parents were living with him. Reginald died in 1857, and Mary in 1871.
- Elizabeth has her own page.
- Ann was born in Priestcliffe in 1802. Nothing more is known of her.
- Thomas was born in 1804 in Priestcliffe. Nothing is known of his early life, but by 1841 he was living with his sister Elizabeth in Flagg, and lead mining with her husband. In 1850 he married Charlotte Forest. They didn't have any children, but spent the rest of their lives in Flagg. Thomas died in 1879.
