John was born in Chapel en le Frith on August 17th 1807 (1), the first child of George and Jane. Soon after his birth the family moved to Little Hucklow (2), where his mother originally came from (3). A brother George followed in 1809 (2), but he only lived for a few months (4). A sister Martha was born in 1812 (5), and then another brother Edward in 1814 (6), but he died the following year (7), Another brother, William, was born in 1816 (8). His youngest sister Hannah followed in 1821 (9), and finally his youngest brother Thomas in 1823 (10). His sister Hannah died in 1829 (11).
John married Sarah Bocking of Abney in 1830 (12), and they had their first child, Ann, a few months later (13). Their son George followed in 1832 (14), and their other daughter, Elizabeth was born in 1834 (15).
John's father died in 1835 (16), then his wife, aged just 29, in 1840 (17)(18), leaving John to raise their children alone (19). John also died young, of dropsy, aged just 35, on 9th December 1842 (20). He was buried two days later in Hope (21).
