1722 - 1777

Father Solomon Mycock
Mother Mary Taylor
1st Wife Mary
2nd Wife Sarah Ashmore
Children Matthew, Thomas, Richard, Michael, Sarah, Martha, Betty, Mary, Matthew, Hannah, John, Elizabeth

Matthew was born in Flagg in 1722, the son of Solomon and Mary (1). He had four older brothers - George, Francis, Richard and Solomon; and two older sisters - Anne and Mary (2). His youngest sister Hannah was born when he was 4 (3). His father died when he was 10 (4).

He married young, to a woman named Mary (5)(6)(7), and their first son Matthew was born at the end of 1740 (5). They had another son, Thomas, in 1744 (6). Matthew then went through a rough spell, starting when his mother died a month or so later (8), and also his wife, sometime around this period (7). His eldest son Matthew died the following summer (9).

Still aged only 23, Matthew married for the second time on 2nd January 1746, to Sarah Ashmore (10). He remained in Flagg, and his next son Richard was born there the followng year (11), followed by Michael in 1749 (12). Next came four daughters - Sarah in 1751 (13), Martha in 1752 (14), Betty in 1754 (15) and Mary, in 1757 (16), but soon after Mary's birth, his daughter Betty died (17).

He had another son, also called Matthew, in 1760 (18), followed by a daughter Hannah in 1762 (19), then youngest son John in 1765 (20), and finally Elizabeth in 1767 (21).

Matthew died in 1777, and was buried in Chelmorton on 22nd June (22).

  6. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Chelmorton includes the entry:
[1744] 7ber 24th Bapd Thomas son of Matthew Mycock of Flagg & Mary his wife
  7. Whilst no record of Matthew's marriage to Mary, or her death, has been found, I have reconstructed the details of all Mycocks in Flagg in this period, and the father named in Matthew's and Thomas's baptisms (5)(6) cannot realisticaly apply to any other Matthew Mycock, so I have to conclude that Matthew had a short lived first marriage to a woman called Mary. This being the case she must have died between the birth of their son Thomas in late summer 1744 (6), and Matthew's marriage to Sarah Ashmore at the beginning of 1746 (10). It seems likely to have been closer to the beginning of this period.
  8. Burial entry in parish register of St John the Baptist's, Chelmorton reads:
[1744] October 21st Burd: Mary Mycock of Flagg widow
  9. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Chelmorton includes the entry:

  10. Bishop's transcript of the Parish Register of St Leonard's, Monyash includes the entry:
[February 1746] 2d Marrd ... Matthew Mycocke of Flagg & Sarah Ashmore of Heathfield nook

  13. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Chelmorton includes the entry:
[1751] 9ber 10th Bapd Sarah Daughter of Matthew Mycock of Flagg & SarahMartha his wife
There was obviously some confusion over Matthew's wife's name, but it must have been Sarah, as there was no known couple named Matthew & Martha in the area at the time.

[1752] 8ber 31st Bapd Martha Daughter of Matthew Mycock of Flagg & Sarah his wife
  15. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Chelmorton includes the entry:
[1754] 7ber 7th Bapd             Daughter of Matthew Mycock of Flagg & Sarah his wife
The name of Matthew & Sarah's daughter is missing from this entry. As there was a burial for their (seemingly unbaptised) daughter named Betty three years later (17), this is assumed to be her baptism
  16. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Chelmorton includes the entry:
[1757] 8ber 5th Bapd Mary Dr of Matthew Mycock of Flagg & Sarah
