Ann Holme

1811 - 1894

Father William Holme
Mother Martha Dickens
Husband Samuel Slack
Children Joseph, William, Richard, Sarah Anne, Thomas, Samuel, Caroline, Martha, John, Elizabeth, Ann

Ann was born in Stanton Lees on 2nd January 1811, the daughter of William and Martha, and baptised at Darley 3 weeks later, (1). Her parents don't seem to have lived in Stanton Lees for very long, and the family moved to Chelmorton Flatt sometime over the next three years (2).

She had two elder brothers - Peter and Ellis, and an elder sister Mary (2). Her sister Sarah was born in 1812 (3), then Elizabeth in 1814 (4), Martha in 1816 (5) and Hannah in 1818 (6). Next came a brother William in 1819 (7), another sister Eliza in 1821 (8), then another brother Thomas in 1823 (9). Her sister Elizabeth died later that year (10)(11). Her brother Richard was born in 1826 (12), her youngest sister (another) Elizabeth in 1827 (13), and finally youngest brother Robert in 1829 (14).

Ann married Samuel Slack, possibly in Manchester in late 1832 (15), and they settled on Chapelstead farm in Wormhill (19)(22)(23)(24)(27)(29)(31)(36), where their first child Joseph was born in 1833 (17). Another son William followed in 1834 (18), and then Richard in 1835 (20). Their first daughter, Sarah Anne was born in 1837 (21), and then they had another son Thomas the following year (22). Sarah Anne died aged just 2 in 1839 (23), and so following the birth of son Samuel in 1840 (24), they appear in the 1841 census with 5 sons but no daughters. The size of the farm is hinted at by their having 3 live-in teenage servants - two "agricultural labourers" and a "female servant" (25).

The tendency towards sons was finished by this time, and they had a daughter Caroline in 1842 (26), and then another named Martha in 1843 (27). Their youngest son John followed in 1845 (28), and finally they had two more daughtes - Elizabeth in 1846 (29) and Ann in 1848 (30).

Ann's mother had come to live with them following the death of her father sometime around the 1840s (2), hence by the 1851 census, Samuel and Ann have their six sons and four daughters, Ann's mother, and a middle aged widow "house servant" living with them. There was no longer any need to employ farm labourers as by this time their three eldest sons were employed full time on the farm (31).

Her eldest son Joseph married and moved out in 1856 (32), followed by sons William in 1859 (33), and Thomas in 1860 (34). Her daughter Martha left home to live with her brother William somewhere around this time (35), thus by the 1861 census these 4 children were no longer living at home. Her brother in law Richard, and her niece Julia had moved in in their place though (36).

Her son John died in 1862 (37). Her daughter Caroline married and left home in 1864 (38), and then her daughter Ann in 1866 (39). Sometime between then and the death of her mother in April 1869 (40), Ann and Samuel moved to Great Hucklow, where Samuel died just three months after her mother (41).

Following Samuel's death, Ann moved in with her son Thomas, either immediately in Tideswell, or shortly afterwards when he moved to Wessington, where she appears with him in the 1871 census (42).

Its not clear how long she stayed with Thomas, but she was back in Tideswell by the time of the 1881 census, when he unmarried son Richard, and her grandson Joseph were living with her (43). They were still with her in 1891, although they had moved house in the meantime (44).

She died in October 1894, aged 83 (45), and was buried in Wormhill (46).
