William Flint

1796 - 1866

William was born in Tideswell in April or May 1796 ⁽¹⁾, and baptised on 27th June of that year ⁽²⁾. He was the third son of Hugh and Ann/Nancy, with older brothers John (about 7 years older ⁽³⁾) and Hugh (about 3 years older ⁽⁴⁾). His younger brother James was born about 1799 ⁽⁵⁾, followed by only sister Hannah about 1804 ⁽⁶⁾, then another brother John about 1808 ⁽⁷⁾ (the elder one having died in 1802), and finally Matthew in about 1810 ⁽⁸⁾.

He married Elizabeth Crookes at St John the Baptsist's in Tideswell on 25th June 1821 ⁽⁹⁾. They set up home in Tideswell and he worked as a general labourer. Their first child Ann was born later the same year ⁽¹⁰⁾, followed by son George just after Christmas 1823⁽¹¹⁾. Unfortunately George only lived for 8 days, dying in early January 1824 ⁽¹²⁾, and his sister Ann died the following month ⁽¹³⁾. Their next child Mary Ann was born in 1835 ⁽¹⁴⁾, followed by Hugh in 1828 ⁽¹⁵⁾, then William in 1831 ⁽¹⁶⁾, but William died the following year ⁽¹⁷⁾. Their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1833 ⁽¹⁸⁾, and then Jane was born at the beginning of 1836 ⁽¹⁹⁾. Sometime over the next few few months they moved to Poynton in Cheshire ⁽²⁰⁾, where William found work as a lime/coke burner ^{(35)(36)(28)(37)}, but they didn't have a happy start there as youngest daughter Jane died aged just five months ⁽²¹⁾, and then within a couple of days, son Hugh died aged 8 ⁽²²⁾. Sometime after the birth of their next child Frances in 1837 ⁽³⁵⁾, they moved about 3 miles north to the Hatherlow/Romiley area⁽²⁰⁾. Their next son, Alfred, was born on Green Lane there in 1839 ⁽²⁴⁾. They then moved to Worth, in Poynton, sometime before his baptism the following September ⁽³⁶⁾, and were stll there at the census of June 1841⁽²⁸⁾. Their daughter Harriet was born there in 1842 ⁽³⁷⁾, before their final move back to Tideswell, sometime between then and the death of daughter Mary Ann in 1844 ⁽²⁵⁾. Their daughter Elizabeth died in 1846 ⁽²⁶⁾. Their youngest daughter Martha, was born in 1848 ⁽²⁷⁾.

At the census of 1851 ⁽²⁹⁾, William was living in Town Head in Tideswell, with his wife and their only survivng children, the four youngest ones, Frances, Alfred, Harriett and Martha. He was working as an agricultural labourer. Eldest daughter Frances married in 1859, so by the 1861 census, only three children were still living at home ⁽³⁰⁾.

William died of "disease of heart" on 16th May 1866 ⁽³¹⁾, and was buried in Tideswell 3 days later ⁽³²⁾. His wife survived him by 14 years ^(33)(34).

• Ann was born in Tideswell in 1821 and died in 1824.
• George was born just after Christmas 1823 in Tideswell. He only lived for 8 days.
• Mary Ann was born in Tideswell in 1825. She died aged 18 in 1844.
• Hugh was born in Tideswell in 1828. He died in Poynton in 1836 aged 8.
• William was born in 1831, He died the following year.
• Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in 1833. She died in 1846 aged 13.
• Jane was born in Tideswell in January 1836. She died in June the same year in Poynton.
• Frances was probably born in Poynton in 1837. She moved to Tideswell in the 1840s, and later worked there as a weaver. She married Jervis Hall Cartlegde in Tideswell in 1859. They had 5 children - Alfred, Thomas, Ernest, John and Absalom. Her husband died in a quarry accident in 1881. She survived him by another 35 years, dying in 1916.

• Harriet was born in 1842 in Poynton. She moved to Tideswell as an infant. As a teenager she worked in a cotton factory. She married William Gibson in 1863, and they set up home in Tideswell. They had 6 children between then and 1879 - Ann Elizabeth, Alice, Mary Jane, Priscilla, Frederick and Ernest. Her husband died in 1906. Harriet died in 1917.
• Martha was born in Tideswell in 1848. Before marriage she worked as a weaver. In 1869 she married Thomas Duffin, a blacksmith originally from Leicester. They had four daughters - Mary Elizabeth, Frances Harriet, Martha and Laura. They still lived in Tideswell at the time of the 1901 census. Nothing later is known of them.

20. The movements of William and family between 1836 and 1844 are a little confused, but the most likely scenario is that they moved from Tideswell to Poynton in the first half of 1836, then not too long afterwards moved about 3 miles north to Hatherlow or Romiley, before moving to Worth around 1840. From there they returned to Tideswell around 1843. This is what I have to go on:
    • In January 1836 they were still in Tideswell as indicated at the baptism of their daughter Jane.
    • In June 1836 they were in Poynton, as indicated at the burials of children Jane and Hugh
    • Their daughter Frances gives her age/birth details in later censuses thus: 1841 age 3; 1851 age 14 birth Pointon; 1861 age 24 birth Hatherlow; 1871 (age 33) & 1881 (age 43) POB is given as Tideswell but only by virtue of 'dittoing' the above entry; 1891 age 53, Poynton; 1901 age 64 Poynton. I have not found a baptism for her, nor was her birth registered (which inplies it was before July 1837). All this tells me is that around the first half of 1837 they were either living in Poynton or Hatherlow.
    • In October 1839, on Alfred's birth certificate, Williams abode is given as Green Lane, Romiley. On modern maps Green Lane is shown as a short road running on the edge of Romiley which adjoins a road called Hatherlow. In the early 19th century Hatherlow was a hamlet in the village of Bredbury. Modern maps show Bredbury to be about a mile west, so it seems likely that the moden road Hatherlow is in the location of the ancient hamlet of the same name.
    • In the census of June 1841, they are living at Worth Clough, which is on the ouskirts of Poynton.
    • Their daughter Harriet gives her place of birth as either Worth or Poynton in various cenuses. Her birth was registered the first quarter of 1842, in the Macclesfield Registration Ditrict (which covers Poynton and Worth, but not Romiley). I have not found a baptism for her.
    • In April 1844 they were back inTideswell as shown by the burial of daughter Mary Ann.
