John Walton

1709 - 1781

John was born in 1709, the son of William and Barbara ⁽¹⁾. He had an elder sister Srah and an younger sister Susanna ⁽²⁾. His mother died, and his father remarried a woman called Ann sometime before John was 8, after which half sister Mary, and half brothers Thomas and Elisha were born ⁽²⁾. His father died when John was just 14 ⁽³⁾.

John married Jane Salt in Tideswell on 18th October 1729 ⁽⁴⁾. Their first child, William, was born in 1731 but only lived for a few days ⁽⁵⁾⁽⁶⁾. They had a daughter Alice the folowing year ⁽⁷⁾, then another one, Sarah, in 1734 ⁽⁸⁾, but she died aged just two ⁽⁹⁾, a few months before the birth of their eldest (surviving) son John ⁽¹⁰⁾. Another son, Richard, followed in 1738 ⁽¹¹⁾, then a daughter Jane in 1740 ⁽¹²⁾. Their second son to be named William was born (and died) in 1742 ^(13)(14), and their second daughter named Sarah the following year ⁽¹⁵⁾. Three more daughters followed - Mary in 1745 ⁽¹⁶⁾, Barbara in 1748 ⁽¹⁷⁾, and Ann in 1751 ⁽¹⁸⁾. Their youngest son James was born in 1752 ⁽¹⁹⁾, but he died shortly after his second birthday ⁽²⁰⁾. Finally their youngest daughter Susannah was born in 1755 ⁽²¹⁾, but she also died young in 1761 ⁽²²⁾.

John's wife, Jane, died in 1772 ⁽²³⁾. Facing his own death, John wrote his will at the end of February 1781 ⁽²⁴⁾, and died early the next month, around his 72nd birthday ⁽²⁶⁾.

• William was born in Tideswell in 1731. He died there a few days later.
• Alice was born in Tideswell in 1732. In 1751 she married Samuel Kirk, a tailor. They initially settled in Tideswell, where their first son William was born in 1752, but are assumed to have moved away soon after that as they don't appear in the Tideswell parish registers again. She was still alive in 1781 when he father wrote his will, but otherwise nothing further is known of her.
• Sarah was born in 1734 in Tideswell. She died aged two.

• Richard was born in 1738. Nothing more is known of him, but he is assumed to have been dead by the time his father wrote his will in 1781.
• Jane was born in Tideswell in 1740. She married a man surnamed Barker, and was still alive in 1781, but nothing more is known of her.
• William was born in 1742 in Tideswell. He only lived a few days.
• Sarah was born in Tideswell in 1743. She married a man surnamed Gandy, and was still alive in 1781, but nothing more is known of her.
• Mary waas born in 1745 in Tideswell. In 1762 she married Joseph Bunting a local blacksmith. They settled in Great Hucklow and had chilren Samuel, Ann, Joseph and Susannah. Mary died there in 1815.
• Barbara was born in Tideswell in 1748. She had an illegitimate daughter, Alice, in 1772, and died in 1780.
• Ann was born in Tideswell in 1751. She married a man surnamed Tomlinson, and was still alive in 1781, but nothing more is known of her.
• James was born in Tideswell in 1752 and died there in 1754
• Susannah was born in 1755 in Tideswell. She died aged just six.

    In the Name of God Amen I John Walton
    of Tideswell in the County of Derby, being weak and
    Infirm in body but of sound mind and memory blesed
    be God for the same do make and ordain this my last
    Will and Testament in Manner and form following.
    First I give and bequeath unto my Executor Henry Jackson
    all my real and personal estate In trust first of all
    I will that my just debts and funeral expenses shal be
    paid.   In the next place I give and bequeath
    unto my Granson John Walton all my Dwelling house
    where in I now inhabit and dwell with all the Backside
    Garden and all the premises thereunto belonging likewise
    with all my household furniture stock in trade working
    tools Book debts and all the whole of my effects he my
    said Grandson paying unto my Son John Walton
    his Heirs Executors or assigns the sum of twenty
    pounds of Good and lawfull money of Great Britian
    in twelve months after my decease. Likewise it is
    my will that my Grandson John Walton shall pay
    unto my Daughters Alice Kirk, Jane Barker, Sarah
    Gandy, Mary Bunting and Ann Tomlinson the sum
    of two Gunies a piece in twelve months after my
    decease. I likewise give and bequeath unto my
    Grand daughter Alice Walton, the sum of twenty poun[ds]
    which my Executor hath put out to Intrest for the said
    Infant Alice Walton. Likewise I give and bequeath unto
    my Grand daughter Alice Walton one Long Oak Chest that
    stands in the Palour with all her Mother's Barbary Walton
    wearing apparell therein as is in the Inventory hereafter
    named That is to say

    neglect and does not pay the said twenty pounds to My
    son John Walton at the time before mentioned & the
    two Gunies apiece unto my Daughters Alice Kirk, Jane
    Barker, Sarah Gandy, Mary Bunting & Ann Tomlinson
    then it is my will that My Executor Henry Jackson
    shall enter upon the said Dwelling house and premises
    and shal keep possession thereof untill the aforesaid
    twenty pound and two Gunies apiece shall be paid
    and fully discharged.
    And Lastly I nominate and appoint Henry Jackson
    My Sole Executor of this my last will and Testament
    And I do hereby revoke all former Wills by me heretofore
    made. I do publish and declare this my last will and
    testament. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my
    hand and seal the twenty fiveth day of Feb: in the
    year of our lord 1781
