William Hodgkinson

1694 - 1750

Father John Hodgkinson
Mother Grace
1st Wife Alice Micock
2nd Wife Sarah Goite
Children Mary, Joseph, William, Jane, Matthew, Hannah, Benjamin, Thomas, John, Martha, William

William was born in 1694 in Over Haddon, and baptised in Bakewell on 29th March (1), the third child of John and Grace Hodgkinson. He had two older sisters, Margaret and Martha (2). His mother died when he was just one year old (3), but his father married again within the next couple of years to a woman called Margaret, with whom he had a son Joshua in 1698. They had another son Francis in 1707; then daughters Martha in 1710, and Rebeckah in 1712 (2).

It seems William found himself having to get married in a hurry in the spring of 1716, as within two months of his marriage to Alice Micock, at All Saints in Bakewell (4), they were back again for the baptism of their daughter Mary (5). Unfortunately it was only 4 days later, that they went back for a third time to bury her (6).

William and Alice moved to Flagg (7), sometime after this, but he may still have been living at home when his youngest sister Grace was born later that month. Two more younger brothers would follow, but both died in infancy (2).

They didn't stay too long in Flagg. His his eldest son Joseph was born there in early 1718 (7), but by the time his next son William was born towards the end of 1720 they'd moved to Chelmorton (8). William junior only survived for a few months though (9). Their daughter Jane was probably born next (10), before son Matthew in the summer of 1723 (11). However Matthew also died within a few months (12). They had a daughter Hannah in 1725 (13), then a son Benjamin in 1727 (14). It appears they briefly moved back to Flagg, and were there when their daughter Jane died in 1729 (15). However they were back in Chelmorton again the following year when their youngest son Thomas was born (16).

Alice, William's wife, died just before Christmas the following year (17), but he was married again within six months, to a woman called Sarah Goite (18). They had a son John in 1734 (19), a daughter Martha in 1736 (20), and youngest son William in 1738 (21).

William's father, John, moved to Chelmorton sometime towards the end of his life, and so was probably living with William (2). He died in 1740 (22). William died in 1750, and was buried at St John the Baptists in Chelmorton on 20th April (23). His wife survived him by nearly 19 years (24).

However I believe this to be an error, as the Parish Register (transcript by Val Neal) calls Mary's parents William and Alice, as indeed does the bishop's transcript when Mary was buried a few days later (6).
