Father Richard Prime
Mother Martha Johnson
Wife Sarah Gregory
Children Joseph, Hannah, Daniel, Elizabeth, Ann

Nothing is known for certain of Francis's early life, but he was probably born in Winster(1) around 1757(3), the only known son of Richard and Martha Prime(4). His only known sister, Sarah, died in 1763(5).

He was working as a miner(6) by the time he married Sarah Gregory from Elton in Winster on 6th January 1777(7).

Their eldest son was Joseph, but he died young in 1780(8). He was followed by a daughter Hannah who was born in 1781(9), a son Daniel in 1783(10) and another daughter Elizabeth in 1786(11). They also had daughter Ann, but her date of birth is not known(12).

Francis's mother died in 1786(13), and his father in 1796(14). It is not known when either Francis or Sarah died, but it may have been as early as the late 1780s(15).

Brief details of his children:

Sources:

  1. His parents married in Winster(2), his sister was buried there in 1763(5), and his parents were still living there at the end of their lives(13)(14)(16)
  2. See their respective pages
  3. No baptism record has been found for him, so his date of birth is estimated based on the fact that his parents married in 1754, his wife was born in 1760, and it would have been common for a husband to be a little older than his wife.
  4. His father's identity is known from his will(16), and as he is only known to have married once, to Martha, she is assumed to be Francis's mother.
  5. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Winster includes the entry:
[Burials 1763] Sarah Daughter of Richard Pryme   August 22
  6. Marriage bond, (second page)) dated 5/1/1777 by Francis Prime of the Parish of Youlgreave in the County of Derby Miner & George Holmes of Elton in the Parish & County aforesaid shoemaker concerning the marriage of Francis Prime aforesaid & Sarah Gregory of the Parish of Youlgreave. Confusingly Francis is then described as a farmer on the second page, in which he is described as a batchelor aged twenty one or over, and Sarah a spinster of just sixteen who is marrying with her father's consent.
  7. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Winster includes the entry:

  12. Ann's existence is only known from the will of Francis's father Richard Prime, written in 1791(16)
  13. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Winster includes the entry:

  14. Parish Register of St John the Baptist's, Winster includes the entry:
[Burials 1796] Prime Richard. Feb. 26
  15. No record of either Francis or Sarah is found after 1786, and the wording of his father's will, written in 1791, could imply that Francis and possibly Sarah too were already dead, as he only mentions their children(16). This could explain why Sarah had no more children after the age of 26.
