Matthew was born in Abney Grange in 1734, the eldest child of Thomas & Deborah (1). A brother Dennis was born in 1736 (2), then a sister Mary in 1738 (3), but she only lived for a couple of days (4). Another brother Thomas was born the following year (5), and finally a sister Deborah in 1742 (6).
His mother died in 1743 (7), then his father in 1749 (8), leaving Matthew as head of the family at just 15.
In 1760 he married Mary Archer from Eyam (9). They remained on his family farm at Abney Grange where their first child Ann was born the following year (10). They had another daughter Deborah in 1763 (11), then a son Thomas in 1766 (12), a daughter Mary in 1768 (13), and a son Joseph in 1771 (14), before daughter Martha was born in 1773 (15). Unfortunately Martha only lived for a little over a year (16). Youngest son Matthew was born about 1776 (17), before two final daughters - Betty in 1778 (18), and Sarah in 1780 (19).
His wife Mary died in 1784 (20), but Matthew lived for another 23 years, dying in August 1807 (21).
