Matthew Bocking

1734 - 1807

Matthew was born in Abney Grange in 1734, the eldest child of Thomas & Deborah ⁽¹⁾. A brother Dennis was born in 1736 ⁽²⁾, then a sister Mary in 1738 ⁽³⁾, but she only lived for a couple of days ⁽⁴⁾. Another brother Thomas was born the following year ⁽⁵⁾, and finally a sister Deborah in 1742 ⁽⁶⁾.

His mother died in 1743 ⁽⁷⁾, then his father in 1749 ⁽⁸⁾, leaving Matthew as head of the family at just 15.

In 1760 he married Mary Archer from Eyam ⁽⁹⁾. They remained on his family farm at Abney Grange where their first child Ann was born the following year ⁽¹⁰⁾. They had another daughter Deborah in 1763 ⁽¹¹⁾, then a son Thomas in 1766 ⁽¹²⁾, a daughter Mary in 1768 ⁽¹³⁾, and a son Joseph in 1771 ⁽¹⁴⁾, before daughter Martha was born in 1773 ⁽¹⁵⁾. Unfortunately Martha only lived for a little over a year ⁽¹⁶⁾. Youngest son Matthew was born about 1776 ⁽¹⁷⁾, before two final daughters - Betty in 1778 ⁽¹⁸⁾, and Sarah in 1780 ⁽¹⁹⁾.

His wife Mary died in 1784 ⁽²⁰⁾, but Matthew lived for another 23 years, dying in August 1807 ⁽²¹⁾.

• Ann was born in Abney Grange in 1761. In 1784 she married Joshua Beeley of Hartington. Nothing more is known of her.
• Deborah was born in 1763 in Abney Grange. Nothing more is known of her.
• Thomas was born in Abney Grange in 1766. In 1795 he married Mary Eyre, and they had children Nanny, Martha, Thomas, Matthew, William, Margaret and Thomas. He died in 1835.
• Mary was born in 1768 in Abney Grange. Nothing more is known of her.
• Joseph has his own page.
• Martha was born in 1773 and died the following year.
• Matthew was born in Abney Grange in 1775 or 1776. He married Hannah Hill in 1798, and they had children Ann, Matthew, Joseph, William, Hannah, Thomas, James, Sarah and Robert. He died in 1828.
• Betty was born in 1778 in Abney Grange. Ahe married Francis Eyre in 1796. They had children Mary, Margaret, George, Ann, Joseph, Thomas, Elizabeth, Grace, Hannah, Francis, Barbara, William, Henry, Matty and Matthew. She died in 1848.
• Sarah was born in Abney Grange in 1780. She married Jospeh Burdekin in 1805. They had children John, Ann, Martha, William and Mary. She died in 1850.

    I wasn't able to confirm this from the microfilm of the register, because the page covering that date was not in its appropriate sequential place in the film and/or register, I have no reason to doubt that it can be found somewhere else in the register out of sequence.
