Ann Slack

1848 - 1930

Ann was born on 12th September 1848, ⁽¹⁾ at Chapelsteads Farm ⁽²⁾ in Wormhill, the youngest of ten children (her parents had eleven, but Sarah Anne had died 9 years earlier). She appears in the census of 1851 ⁽³⁾ with them all living on Chapelsteads farm, along with her grandmother Martha Holme, and a live-in servant.

Her brother Joseph left home in 1856 ⁽⁴⁾, William in 1859 ⁽⁵⁾, Martha soon afterwards ⁽⁶⁾ and Thomas in 1860 ⁽⁷⁾, so that by the census of 1861 ⁽⁸⁾ Ann was one of just six siblings still living at home. Her grandmother Martha Holme was still there too, along with her uncle Richard Slack, her mother's niece Julia Holmes, and a 3 year old "visitor" Martha Gill, who may turn out to be related somehow but I'm not sure how yet.

By 1866 she was working in Tideswell as a domestic servant ⁽⁹⁾. On Christmas Eve that year, she married Alfred Flint in Tideswell Church ⁽⁹⁾. Their first child Martha was born in October the following year ⁽¹⁰⁾, followed by their son William Slack in April 1869 ⁽¹¹⁾. Her father Samuel died shortly afterwards in July 1869 ⁽¹²⁾. Their daughter Rosa was born in about February 1871 ⁽¹³⁾. By the census of 2nd April 1871 that year, Ann was living with her husband, three children, and her brother Richard, in Back Lane, Tideswell ⁽¹⁴⁾.

Her next son Samuel was born in early 1873 ⁽¹⁵⁾, followed by Elizabeth in 1875 ⁽¹⁶⁾, Alfred in 1877 ⁽¹⁷⁾, Henry in 1878 ⁽¹⁸⁾ and John Thomas in 1880 ⁽¹⁹⁾. By the census of April 1881 ⁽²⁰⁾ the family is made up of Alfred, Ann and 8 children, living at the top of Townhead in Tideswell.

Their daughter Elizabeth died in 1882 ⁽²¹⁾, but towards the end of that year, or the beginning of 1883, their next daughter Caroline was born ⁽²²⁾, followed by Charles in 1885 ⁽²³⁾, Ann in 1888 ⁽²⁴⁾ and finally Edwin in 1889 ⁽²¹⁾. Edwin only survived for 17 months though, dying in November 1890 ⁽²¹⁾.

By the 1891 census ⁽²⁴⁾, Ann, Alfred and nine of their children are living in Ivy Cottage, Townhead. This house was far too small for the size of family (it may have been one up one down), and the children are said to have slept in shifts ⁽²⁶⁾. Ann's mother died in October 1894 ⁽²⁷⁾

By the 1901 census ⁽²⁸⁾ Alfred and Ann were still there, but only three children were still left at home. Nothing more is known until her husband Alfred's death on 28th May 1922 ⁽²⁹⁾ aged 82. Ann died on 25th March 1930 aged 81 ⁽³⁰⁾, and was buried in Tideswell churchyard ⁽²¹⁾.

• Martha was born in Tideswell on 20th October 1867. She married Thomas Fox of Smalldale in 20th May 1889. They lived in Tideswell after their marriage, and had a son John Thomas born in 1890 and a daughter Rosa in 1892. They then moved to Eyam sometime before the birth of their daughter Beatrice there in 1897. By 1898 they had moved again to Tupton, south of Chesterfield, where their daughter Olive was born. • Rosa was born about Februray 1871 in Tideswell. On December 30th 1893 she married Harry Rowland from Eyam. They initially lived in Tideswell where their daughter Gertrude was born the following year. They had moved to Eyam by the time their next daughter Dora was born there about 1898. Nothing more is known of them after that.
• Samuel was born in Tideswell about 1873. He moved to Sheffield sometime in the 1890s and married a woman called Florence. Their first daughter Maggie was born there in 1900. Samuel was a detective in the police. In the 1901 census they were living in West Brightside, Sheffield, and Samuel's brother John Thomas was with them. Nothing more is known of them.
• Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in about 1875. She died aged just 7 in 1882.
• Alfred was born in Tideswell in about 1877. By the time of the 1901 census he was an unmarried shoemaker. His later marital status is not known, but he was still a shoemaker in Tideswell by 1932.
• Henry was born in about 1878 in Tideswell. At the time of the 1901 census he was living in Tupton with his sister Martha, working as a coal miner. He died in 1930 and was buried in Tideswell.
• John Thomas was born in Tideswell in 1880. By the time of the 1901 census he was living with his brother Samuel in Sheffield, working as an "engine tenter". Nothing more is known of him.
• Caroline was born in Tideswell in about January 1883. By the time of the 1901 census she was still living at home with her parents, working as a power loom cotton weaver. Nothing later is known of her.
• Charles was born in Tideswell in about 1885. At the time of the 1901 census he was still living at home with his parents, working as a lime burner. Nothing more is known of him.
• Ann was born in April 1887 in Tideswell. By 1901 she was living with her elder sister Martha in Tupton. Nothing more is known of her.
• Edwin was born in 1889 in Tideswell, and died there aged just 17 months.

2. Her parents were in Chapelsteads at the time of the 1841 census, various baptism entires, and again in the 1851 census, so there's no deoubt they lived there in 1848 when Ann was born.

4. Joseph married Martha Haigh on 24th July 1856, and by the baptism of their first child John in April 1857 was living in High Lane, Cheshire.
5. William married Martha Burdekin on 19th December 1859, and by the time of the birth of their first child John in September 1860, they were living in Tideswell.
6. At the time of the 1861 census Martha was a live-in chambermaid for her brother William in Tideswell, so she must have moved in with him sometime between his marriage and then.
7. Thomas married Sarah Lees on 22nd March 1860, and by the October of that year was living in Fairfield, where their son Edward was born.
