Alfred Flint

1839 - 1922


Alfred at the time of his marriage in 1866.

Alfred was born on Green Lane in Romiley, Cheshire on 10th October 1839 ⁽¹⁾, the 8th child of William & Elizabeth. Soon after his birth the family moved to Worth, a small parish on the eastern outskirts of Poynton, where they living when he was baptised, at St George's, on 6th September the following year ⁽³¹⁾. At least two, and probably as many as four, of his older siblings had already died before Alfred's birth ⁽²⁾, so in the 1841 census ⁽³⁾ he appears living with his parents and just three sisters Mary, Elizabeth and Frances. The family was still there the following year when his sister Harriet was born ⁽⁴⁾, but had moved back to Tideswell, where his parents originated from, by the time his youngest sister Martha was born about 1849 ⁽⁵⁾. The census of 1851 ⁽⁶⁾ shows the family living up Town Head in Tideswell, and 11 year old Alfred was still at school.

By the census of 1861 ⁽⁷⁾, Alfred is still living with his parents, though now on Slagg Hill in Tideswell (is Slagg Hill now Wheston Bank??). He was described simply as a general labourer.

His father died in May 1866 ⁽⁸⁾, which would have left him as the main breadwinner in the family. However he didn't stay with his mother much longer, as a few months later on Christmas Eve, he married Ann Slack, a Wormhill girl who was living in Tideswell working as a domestic servant ⁽⁹⁾. Their first child Martha was born in October the following year ⁽¹⁰⁾, followed by their son William Slack in April 1869 ⁽¹¹⁾, by which time Alfred's occupation was more specific, as he was then said to be a lead miner. Their next child, Rosa, was born in about February 1871 ⁽¹²⁾, and by the census of 2nd April that year, Alfred was living with his wife, three children, and brother-in-law Richard in Back Lane in Tideswell ⁽¹³⁾.

His next son Samuel was born in early 1873 ⁽¹⁴⁾, followed by Elizabeth in 1875 ⁽¹⁵⁾, Alfred in 1877 ⁽¹⁶⁾, Henry in 1878 ⁽¹⁷⁾ and John Thomas in 1880 ⁽¹⁸⁾. His mother Elizabeth died in 1880 ⁽²⁵⁾. Thus by the census of April 1881 ⁽¹⁹⁾ the family is made up of Alfred, Ann and 8 children, living at the top of Townhead in Tideswell. Alfred had also changed jobs and was by then a limestone quarryman.

Their daughter Elizabeth died in 1882 ⁽²⁰⁾, but towards the end of that year their next daughter Caroline was born ⁽²¹⁾, followed by Charles in 1885 ⁽²²⁾, Ann in 1888 ⁽²³⁾ and finally Edwin in 1889 ⁽²⁰⁾. Unfortunately Edwin only survived for 17 months, dying in November 1890 ⁽²⁰⁾.

By the 1891 census ⁽²⁴⁾, Alfred, Ann and nine of their children are living in Ivy Cottage, Townhead, where Alfred was to live for the rest of his life ⁽²⁷⁾, and a number of Alfred's sons seem to have followed him into the limestone industry. This house was far too small for the size of family (it may have been one up one down), and the children are said to have slept in shifts ⁽²⁸⁾. Alfred used to also do some dry stone walling, with occassional help from his son William. William used to say that they'd built the walls on Tom Turner's farm on the road between Sherwood Road in Tideswell, and Millers Dale. They built them 5 feet high and were paid 3 shillings a rood ⁽²⁸⁾.

By the 1901 census ⁽²⁶⁾ Alfred and Ann were still there, but only three children were still left at home. Ten years later, still at the same address, only two children remained at home ⁽³²⁾. Nothing more is known until in November 1919 he wrote his will ⁽³⁰⁾, so he may have been in ill health at the time. It was fairly standard, with everything to his wife, or equally between his children if she died first. Alfred died on 28th May 1922 ⁽²⁷⁾ aged 82, and was buried in Tideswell churchyard ⁽²⁰⁾. He was survived by his widow Ann for 8 years ⁽²⁹⁾.

• Martha (also known as Pattie later in life) was born in Tideswell on 20th October 1867. She married Thomas Fox of Smalldale on 20th May 1889. They lived in Tideswell after their marriage, and had a son John Thomas born in 1890 and a daughter Rosa in 1892. They then moved to Eyam sometime before the birth of their daughter Beatrice there in 1897. By 1898 they had moved again to Tupton, south of Chesterfield, where their daughter Olive was born. • Rosa was born about Februray 1871 in Tideswell. On December 30th 1893 she married Harry Rowland from Eyam. They initially lived in Tideswell where their daughter Gertrude was born the following year. They had moved to Eyam by the time their next daughter Dora was born there about 1898. Nothing more is known of them after that.
• Samuel was born in Tideswell about 1873. He moved to Sheffield sometime in the 1890s and married a woman called Florence Ewing. Their first daughter Maggie was born there in 1900, when Samuel was a detective in the police - he would eventually reach the rank of superintendant, like his brother Charles. In the 1901 census they were living in West Brightside, Sheffield, and Samuel's brother John Thomas was with them. In 1919 he was named as an executor of his father's will, and probate was granted to him in 1922. Nothing more is known of them.
• Elizabeth was born in Tideswell in about 1875. She died aged just 7 in 1882.
• Alfred was born in Tideswell in about 1877. By the time of the 1901 census he was an unmarried shoemaker. Some time after this he married Anice Brocklehurst, the sister of his brother Henry's wife. In 1919 he was named as an executor of his father's will, and probate was granted too him in 1922. He was still a shoemaker in Tideswell in 1932.
• Henry (known as Harry) was born in about 1878 in Tideswell. At the time of the 1901 census he was living in Tupton with his sister Martha, working as a coal miner. He later married Deborah Brocklehurst, the sister of his brother Alfred's wife. He died in 1930 and was buried in Tideswell.
• John Thomas (known as Jack) was born in Tideswell in 1880. By the time of the 1901 census he was living with his brother Samuel in Sheffield, working as an "engine tenter", but he later went on to become a professional violinist. He married a woman called Edith.
• Caroline was born in Tideswell in about January 1883. By the time of the 1901 census she was still living at home with her parents, working as a power loom cotton weaver. Nothing later is known of her except that she married a Mr Hartle (possibly William).
• Charles was born in Tideswell in about 1885. At the time of the 1901 census he was still living at home with his parents, working as a lime burner. He later followed his brother Samuel into the police in Sheffield, where he also reached the rank of superintendent. His first wife, Maggie Cartledge, who was the the sister in law of his sister Ann, died in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. The identity of his second wife in unknown.
• Ann was born in April 1887 in Tideswell. By 1901 she was living with her elder sister Martha in Tupton. She later married Alan Cartledge, a policeman, the brother in law of her brother Charles.
• Edwin was born in 1889 in Tideswell, and died there aged just 17 months.

2. His brothers George (born 1823, died 1824) and William (born 1831, died 1832) were dead long before Alfred's birth. He also had a sister Ann (born 1821) and a brother Hugh (born 1828) who weren't with the family at the 1841 census ⁽¹⁸⁴¹⁾. No burial, marriage or other census entry has so far been found for them so it seems most likely that they were alerady dead by then.

5. Martha's baptism has not been found yet either. She consistently gives her place of birth as Tideswell on censuses though. It is possible that she was also born in Cheshire but for now I have to believe her census entries.

    this my will I GIVE DEVISE AND BEQUEATH all my estate and effects of whatever nature or kind
    unto my trustees IN TRUST after payment of my debts and funeral and testamentary expenses for
    my dear wife Ann Flint for her own absolute use and benefit if she shall beliving at the time
    of my death AND I DIRECT that should my said wife predecease me my trustees shall then hold
    the residue of my estate and effects IN TRUST for all my children who shall have attained the
    age of twenty one years or married under that age PROVIDED that if any child of mine shall have
    died leaving a child or children, him or her surviving then such issue shall take and if more
    than one then equally between them the share which his or her or their parent would have taken had such
    parent survived me IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set myhand this 10th day of November One
