Hannah Prime

1781 - 1855

Father Francis Prime
Mother Sarah Gregory
Husband John Marshall
Children Charles, Roger, James, Mary, Sarah, John, Charles, Abraham, Hannah, Daniel, Jonathan, Henry

Hannah was born in Winster, the daughter of Francis and Sarah Prime, and baptised there on 5th January 1781(1). She was probably their de facto eldest child, as her older brother Joseph had already died before she was born(2), and the birth date of her sister Ann is unknown(3). Her brother Daniel was born in 1783(4) and her sister Elizabeth in 1786(5).

Her grandfather left his estate to be shared between her and her siblings (upon reaching the age of 21) when he died in 1796(6).

She married John Marshall on 27th June 1797(7), and they settled in Elton(11)(21)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30). Six months or so later, their first son Charles was born(8), followed by another son Roger in 1799(9), and then James in 1801(10). For some reason James was baptised twice, firstly in Winster then four days later in Elton(11). Their son Charles died in 1803(12), and then they had two daughters, Mary in 1804(13) and Sarah in 1807(14). Another son John was born in 1809(15). Their daughter Mary died in 1811(16). When their next son was born in 1814, they re-used the name Charles for him(17), no doubt keen to pass on her father in law's name. Their next son Abraham was born in 1816(18), followed by their youngest daughter Hannah in 1819(19). They had three more sons - Daniel in 1822(20), then Jonathan in 1825(21) and Henry was in 1828(22). Their daughter Hannah died the next May(23), followed just a few months later by youngest son Henry just after his first birthday(24).

By the time of the 1841 census all of their children, except sons Charles, Daniel and Jonathan, had left home(25); and by the next in 1851 she and John were living alone(26).

Her husband died at the start of 1853(27)(28) and Hannah a couple of years later on 29th September 1855(29). She was buried in Elton two days later(30).
