1869 - 1945
| Father | Joseph Swindell |
| Mother | Hannah Ashmore |
| Husband | William Slack Flint |
| Children | Edwin, Joseph, May, Ellen |
Emma was born in Tideswell on 18th October 1869 (1), the fourth child of Joseph and Hannah. Her older siblings were John Thomas aged 5 (2), Mary Ellen aged 3 (3) and Samuel aged 1 (4). She was baptised in Tideswell church on 5th December 1869 (5). She appears in the census of 2nd April 1871 with her parents and 3 older siblings living at Crow Holt in Tideswell (6).
Just a couple of weeks later, on 16th April, her next sister Elizabeth was born (7), and she was followed in about the summer of 1872 by a brother William (8). Unfortunately Emma's sister Elizabeth died in 1876 aged just 5 years old (9). Her brother Henry was born in autumn 1877 (10), followed by Hannah in summer 1879 (11). Hence by the April 1881 census (12), Emma was still living with her parents at Crow Holt in Tideswell, along with older brothers John Thomas & Samuel, younger brothers William and Henry, and sister Hannah. Her other sister, 15 year old Mary Ellen, was living elsewhere in Tideswell with her aunt Elizabeth Harrison (her mother's sister). Emma's youngest brother Advent was born shortly after the census, around the summer of 1881 (13).
The summer of 1884 would have been unpleasant for Emma as both her elder brothers, John Thomas and Samuel, died around this time (14). In 1888 she and her future husband William were the witnesses at her sister Mary Ellen's wedding (29). The rest of the family were still together at Crow Holt in the census of April 1891 (15), when Emma was said to work as a cotton winder. However when she married, less than three months after this, she didn't give an occupation (16).
Her marriage to William Slack Flint took place at Tideswell Church on 27th June 1891, when her brother William and sister Mary Ellen were the witnesses (16). She must have been at least six momths pregnant at the time, because her first child Edwin, was born three months later (17). Their next child Joseph Swindell was born in 1895 (18). Sometime in the next four years, She and William moved into the White Hart Inn, on Queen Street (19) and were living there when their daughter May was born in May 1899 (20)(30). May's birth came less than a fortnight after Emma's father had died (21). Their youngest child Ellen was born in the autumn of 1900 (22)
The census of 1901 lists Emma, her husband William, and their four children all living in the White Hart, along with a lodger called Joseph Dale (23). Emma's cousin James Francis Drabble (son of her Aunt Hannah Drabble, nee Swindell) was living next door. Three months after this, Emma's mother died aged 62 (24). She, William and family moved to St John's Road sometime in the next decade (28), then again to Millers Dale, probably just before the First World War (25), where William was injured in an accident at work in about 1916.
Little is known of the next three decades, other than that they continued to live at Rock View in Millers Dale. Her husband William died there in 1943 (26), and Emma died less than 2 years later, aged 75, on 10th June 1945 (27). Her death certificate gives her place of death as 3 Baslow Road, Bakewell. This is now the address of Newholme Hospital, so it was undoubtably a hospital of some description then too.
